About us

Twenty years of big-business experience, pointed at your business

I’m Jon Gordon, and I run Propeller Accounting.

I’m a Chartered Accountant, and I have picked up a unique set of skills over 20-plus years across accounting and senior commercial roles. I started my career at EY - Ernst & Young - and have held several senior commercial roles since, so I have spent time as a corporate accountant working with big businesses.

But I love small business. At Propeller it is all about the client - that is why we exist. We partner with our clients and become a key advisor to the business, helping them establish it, grow, and achieve their goals.

We’re hands-on, we’re mobile, and we like to actually talk to people. Give us a call.

Our approach

We work with a business through its whole life, not just its financial year

Every client needs something different depending on where the business has got to. From setting out and not knowing where to start, through to selling up and moving on - the work changes, and so does what you need from an accountant.

01

Starting

Structure, software and systems set up once, properly. The first GST return filed and the first set of numbers you can actually read.

02

Growing

Management accounts every month or quarter, a plan with dates on it, forecasts a bank will lend against, and someone to talk it through with.

03

Running

Compliance handled on time, tax planned rather than discovered, and governance and administration that keeps up with the size you have got to.

04

Exiting

Valuation, due diligence and succession planning - the work that should start years before the business goes on the market, not weeks.

Services

See what each one includes

Fees

One monthly subscription. No invoice for picking up the phone.

We don’t advertise package prices, because it is a marketing gimmick - every business is different and you cannot sort clients into three or four boxes. We look at what your business actually needs, quote it, and that becomes the monthly subscription.

The usual wayOne bill, once a year

Nothing for eleven months, then a number you did not budget for - and a quiet reluctance to ring your accountant in between.

PropellerTwelve equal instalments

Known upfront, spread across the year, and it includes the phone calls.

  • Your fee is known upfront. We review what your business actually needs and give you a no-obligation quote before anything starts. No surprises at the end of the year.
  • Paid monthly. Twelve instalments rather than one lump, so the cashflow burden is spread across the year instead of landing in one month.
  • Phone calls are included. Ad-hoc questions about your accounting, GST and tax are part of the subscription. The expectation of a separate invoice should never be a barrier to talking to your accountant - so you won’t get one.
  • Anything bigger is agreed first. For work beyond the subscription we discuss and agree the scope and the fee in advance.

Where we work

Whangarei and Bream Bay, and we come to you

Propeller has offices based in Whangarei and Marsden Point, however, we work with clients throughout New Zealand. If local, we are mobile and can come to you.

We like to connect with our clients regularly rather than once a year at tax time. Most of what we do can be done from anywhere, but the conversations that actually change a business tend to happen sitting across a table.
